Chapter Books For Young Readers

Chapter Books by M.E. Heller

“What is a Chapter Book?” the child would ask. “A Chapter Book is a treasure trove of stories” I would say. “Its chapters are like the segments of an orange or the beads of a necklace. They tie everything together.  Sometimes a chapter is enough for one session while sometimes it demands  you keep on reading to find out what happens next.  Hurrah for the Chapter Book I say, and we are so glad to have finished three of them,  all about the brownies, those mythical little beings  made famous by Palmer Cox.

BOOK III   The Gate between The Worlds

“What is a Brownie?” the child would ask. “The Brownie is a kind of gnome” I would say. “A brownie lives in a world invisible to most humans, although some few  do claim to have seen one out of the corner of their eye. A brownie is most helpful says the myth, never cruel or stupid like the goblin, for instance.”

The child wanted more  so I closed my eyes and spread the wings of my imagination. I  flew from one invisible world to another and, here and there and everywhere, in caves and tunnels, in fields of flowers, in underwater palaces, in fiery planets, in lairs piled high with treasure I found them all; brownies and fairies, elves and goblins, dragons and wizards,  even a salamander prince.
